EVERYBODY DIES A LITTLE ON VALENTINE'S DAY

by JOHN MOORE

/

about

Written and recorded in London. Drums recorded in LA, by Brian, via the internet. I had to be inventive, due to lockdown restrictions , and zero budget - I wanted a barrel organ, but they're hard to come by even at the best of times, unless you live in pre-war Berlin. I multi-layered a glockenspiel, but I think it works. The dancing monkey was Walter my cat! The choir is all me - I suppose I could have asked the Tory cabinet in, but they were busy with their own mass gatherings. The words are fairly straightforward - Stephen Sondheim, meets Dion and The Belmonts at Stratford on Avon - we've all been there! The title came during a meeting with a shrink, which I had to pause because the words were coming through fast. She was very understanding about it.
It's the third track from my forthcoming LP All's Well That Ends Well - which I think is coming forth on 3rd June - but not before some more tracks - If The Beatles can release one a month, then so can I. This is a seasonal record, so the next track will be Spring-like.
That's it. I hope you enjoy Everybody Dies A Little On Valentine's Day. We're all grown ups! x

lyrics

Everybody Dies A Little On Valentine’s Day

Stupid tokens of affection that never comes
Book a table at a restaurant, a table for one
Stare out the window, stare at the floor
Look at the people that we were before
It’s true what they say
Everybody dies a little on Valentine’s Day

Look at Cupid he’s so stupid
With his little pink bum
Bows and arrows miss their targets
You’d be better off with a gun
And those chocolates from the drugstore
Out of the window from the tenth floor
Even handpicked roses couldn’t change this world from grey
Everybody dies a little on Valentine’s Day.

Oh Sugar kisses, whispered nothings, life was so sweet!
Pink afternoons between cool satin sheets
We’d send out the servants, now I walk the streets
The food here’s fantastic but I don’t want to eat
The waiter asks “Is everything here OK?”
I’m just dying here a little on Valentine’s day

Bah bah bah bah, bah bah bah bah
Bah bah bah bah, bah bah bah bah
It’s true what they say
Everybody dies a little on Valentine’s Day

‘Cause you went away, and that’s not OK
And I’ll never be better off without you, oh no
So why pretend that hearts ever mend?
They keep beating, and beating and beat, beat, beat, beat
‘Til they stop!

Getting dark in the park drinking punishment wine
May be bitter may be cheap but it lasts a long time
And it cleans out your insides, dissolves every trace
Of her spun golden hair and that beautiful face
But it never goes away
Everybody dies a little on Valentine’s Day

‘Cause she’ll never come back, she went away
Now everybody dies a little on Valentine’s Day
Everybody dies a little on Valentine’s Day
Everybody dies a little on Valentine’s Day
